TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: THE ANTLERS + TWIN TIGERS

It's not surprise that when there is a great show in LA, half the time it's presented by AQUARIUM DRUNKARD. Tonight's triple bill at The Bootleg Theater of MINUS THE BEAR, THE ANTLERS and TWIN TIGERS proves once again that their taste is on the top shelf. Minus The Bear have always been their indie selves, but it's the runaway train that is THE ANTLERS that have people talking everywhere. Our new favorites out of Athens, GA, TWIN TIGERS open up, so be sure to get there early so you don't miss them.

Elefant "Lou" from elefant on Vimeo.

Check out the latest video from our friend's ELEFANT for the track, "Lou" from what will be their third album that is still being mixed. Diego and Co. are back performing live in November (Irving Plaza, Troubadour, Cashbah, others) with plans to let go of the full-length in early 2010.

TONIGHT IN LOS ANGELES: TWIN TIGERS @ THE VIPER ROOM

We were recently in Nashville for the NEXT BIG NASHVILLE conference, and on our showcase at The End we happened upon one of our new favorite bands in some time - TWIN TIGERS from Athens, Georgia. Watch this band closely, it's the kind of band that could dismantle SilverSun Pickups from their perch on top of the Smashing Pumpkins/Primal Scream/Sonic Youth post. Their live show is stunning, and not to be missed because the next time you see these kids, they'll probably be opening for some huge act like R.E.M.. Tonight's set at the Viper Room is not to be missed.

TONIGHT IN NEW YORK @ CMJ: THE RUMBLE: BROOKLYN @ SOUTHPAW

A special edition RUMBLE: BROOKLYN goes down tonight @ Southpaw as we weave our madness into CMJ 2009. The line up is stellar.....take a look.

PAUL + THE PATIENTS (830-9)

"just damn addictive... psychedelic-based songs, the tracks consistently hook in your head" rcrdlbl.com

"I am exploding with the need to talk about a band I am fucking obsessed with right now: Paul and The Patients" ultragrrrl.blogspot.com

'Musically, this is the kind of band that the major labels try their best to create artificially. Catchy hooks abound, comfy atmospheres dominate, intelligent lyrics surprise, and it’s all easily accessible with a capital ‘A’." breakthruradio

"So many bands play hard and fast but very few are smart enough to create songs that stay with you after the amps are turned down... It is this dedication to lyrics combined with amazing hooks and bruising garage rock-soul that make this album truly special." knocksfromtheunderground.com

"Holmes’ knack for writing catchy songs. His vocals loom large over the music on the tracks—it’s mostly smooth, but at points is pushed to a perfect, raspy howl." New York Press

CLASS ACTRESS (9:15-9:45)

“We’ve gone on record repeatedly about how much we love Elizabeth Harper, and we stand by our assertion that she’s fronting one of the most promising bands in New York City.” – L Magazine

Elizabeth Harper is a Class Actress, that being the name of her musical solo-project-cum-band, an electro-pop outfit sonically not to far afield of their Brooklyn neighbors Chairlift. Unlike their peers, however, Class Actress substitute an Apple endorsement for a stack of interesting, well-composed retro new wave, and the exuberant drum-machine beat and Tears for Fears synths on "All the Saints" are tied together with Harper's romantically smoky vocal performance. - PITCHFORK FORKCAST

Once the solo project of singer Elizabeth Harper, Class Actress is now a fully-formed band, hustling around Brooklyn's preening, synth-obsessed pop scene like Chairlift's alien-abducted step siblings. "Careful What You Say" gets its kicks from ballooning square waves much like the aforementioned trio, only instead of grabbing for the hook they're content to float amongst their own self-created fog. - RCRDLBL

"Harper is a beauty with a voice like a sleepy winter afternoon. Alternately playful and melancholy, Harper’s songwriting is reminiscent of the Smiths.” – TimeOutNY

“A patch of green, Anglophilic moss thriving in the shade of the monolith that is Brooklyn’s music scene. With Harper rightfully compared to a female version of the beloved Mozzer, it’s no wonder she was first signed overseas by London’s Angular Records. Impeccable in both presentation (her demo's wax-paper packaging was covered in black-ink calligraphy) and performance, her songs recall Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, and New Order at their most tasteful." – Flavorpill

CASXIO (10:00 - 10:35)
Casxio (Ca-See-Oh) are a refreshing divine fusion of disco, funk and rock n’ roll. Reminiscent of a sound that first infiltrated our airwaves over a quarter of a century ago,Casxio is what happens when Prince, the Talking Heads, and Sly Stone all get their hearts broken by the same girl .

About to head to the East Coast for select tour dates this October, including CMJ '09 (to coincide with their forthcoming EP 'Seventeen'). We are more than proud to introduce a band certain to generate a buzz from their unique 70's inspired sound and top notch live delivery.

Indeed, you may not have heard of this Los Angeles based quartet Casxio until now, however it’s a matter of time before they are on everyone’s radar and playlists this summer and beyond. Since their inception in 2007, Casxio has developed an impressive retinue, hailed by critics and garnering a loyal following of revelers, (including cohorts Sam Sparro, Yelle and Datarock).

Inspired by the soulful falsetto balladry of classic icons as diverse as Curtis Mayfield, and Hall & Oates, Casxio’s aim is to "be more than just a friend to you” -Bringing the intensity and emotion back into a world where pop has become stagnant and disposable, this West Coast four-piece revives the timeless soul and funk feeling we've been long since waiting for.

Check out video for new catchy single "Seventeen"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07zMjzAeJ5Q

AEROPLANE PAGEANT (10:45-11:15)

"Somewhere between Of Montreal and MGMT, you’ll find New York’s Aeroplane Pageant. 2007’s Wave To The MoonEven The Kids Don’t Believe Me. earned the four childhood friends a spot onstage with Vampire Weekend, the Hold Steady and Dr. Dog; “Stars Still Pretty” is the first video from the dreamy new album" MAGNET

“It’s a fucking weird album! I like it! I have to listen some more, because it has that Fiery Furnaces thing about it: DEEP, REQUIRES EFFORT. But I was very surprised in good ways at the bizarre arrangements and the way the melodies don’t follow and stuff. My kind of thing, in fact. Consider me a fan, and put me on the mailing list, and all that sort of thing.” -Rick Moody

TEENAGE PRAYERS (11:30-12:05)

"Tim Adams inflects his voice with some of the soul of a Nathan Willett and a Jim James when he sings about sex as well as escape and being lost in the cluster, and his band mates help to create a sound that is rambunctious in its meaning and energy, giving off sparks and the kind of cleansing, sweaty movement that all good days should have at least a little bit of or they’ve been wasted. The Teenage Prayers makes sure that theirs – the prayers and all of the things that actually did happen – weren’t in vain. DAYTROTTER.COM:

Everyone Thinks You're the Best is a rocking good time, executed with soul and conviction, and ultimately a wonderful endorsement for a band that must be a blast in a live setting.
ALL MUSIC GUIDE

"If you’ve bounced from Marah to the Hold Steady to Art Brut looking to recapture the high you get from discovering fresh, 24-karat rock ’n’ roll, you need to freebase New York’s Teenage Prayers… this Steve Wynn-produced follow-up clobbers cool and catchy with maniacal rock brilliance."
BOSTON HERALD: “A” -

"Bucking the "nostalgia band" trend by being authentically nostalgic, the Teenage Prayers cause you to give blessings to that raw, purely enthusiastic adolescent music fan in all of us."

NEW SOUNDS: O EMPEROR

O EMPEROR
MYSPACE
Hometown: Waterford, Cork, Ireland

Of all the bands I caught last night here in Dublin at the HARD WORKING CLASS HEROES Festival, the real standout was this band from Cork, O EMPEROR that played early on at Andrews Lane. Think FLEET FOXES/LOCAL NATIVES, with various vocalists and the vibe of THE BAND thrown in for good measure. It was warm and personal and genuine, but still has its best music ahead. Give this one some time and some sunlight and it's going to grow into something large. I'm trying to swindle a copy of their debut single, "Po" out of someone before I leave town. Unsigned.

FUTURE SOUNDS RADIO DEBUTS 10.12.09

Here is more information on artists that we played today on the Future Sounds on WOXY radio program....

MEAGHAN SMITH
http://www.myspace.com/meaghansmithmusic
Hometown: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Track: I Know

We've been waiting for what feels like a Canadian winter to get the full-length from MEAGHAN SMITH, a lady with a voice that's beyond amazing. We first tipped her in January of 2008, you should hear plenty from her this fall and in 2010. Nettwerk Records

PENGUIN PRISON
http://www.myspace.com/penguinprison
Hometown: New York
Track: A Funny Thing

NYC producer, Penguin Prison drops his own record this time instead of remixing whatever's hot, and if you're a fan of crazy synths and experimentation, PP delivers. Unsigned

CHAPEL CLUB
http://www.myspace.com/chapelclub
Hometown: London
Track: Surfacing

This one just popped into FSHQ and I was instantly caught by this INTERPOL meets WHITE LIES. This frontman has some pipes, this band should jump to the front of the line quickly. Unsigned

THE BLOODSUGARS
http://www.myspace.com/bloodsugars
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
Track: Light At The End Of The Tunnel

We were turned onto this band by WOXY, so we're late to the game but making up for lost time with this spin. Engine Room Recordings

THEM: YOUTH
http://www.myspace.com/themyouth
Hometown: London
Track: Lost N Lonely

This London act has gotten UK radio love from Zane Lowe and John Kennedy and I just received four new tracks from management that turned my head. I'll be spinning more from Them: Youth in coming weeks, just discovered a ballad that's delightful. Dirty Boots Records

TUNE-YARDS
http://www.myspace.com/tuneyards
Hometown: In her car
Track: FIYA

Lo-fi madness continues to be in fashion, and this crazy lady Tune-Yards has plenty of eyes on her, with 4AD behind her as she takes lazy day folk rock and gives it a COCOROSIE type spin. Marriage/4AD

FIRST EVER THE RUMBLE: LAS VEGAS HAPPENS TONIGHT @ THE ARUBA

Vegas? Yeah, you heard it right, our little Rumble parties have now crept to Sin City to THE ARUBA where FITZ & THE TANTRUMS will finish their week long run of Rumbles that started in Seattle and have blazed a trail of new disciples in it's path. That puts us in seven US cities a month now, and we're gunnin' for 12 by March 2010.

Future Sounds has teamed up with Las Vegas' NEON REVERB, people that know how to throw a party for the inaugural Vegas Rumble. In case you were wondering, this won't be your typical big casino, tourist party, this is deep in the heart of the Vegas that people that live and sleep there hang out.

We took the lead from NR on some local acts that are now on our radar, and A CROWD OF SMALL ADVENTURES will headline, and THE MAD CAPS will open up the event. The special guest DJ is REX DART at this FREE party that also has a built in after-party.

The Rumble: Las Vegas starts tonight, but the talk already started:

THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO TONIGHT @ THE CASBAH

San Diego, you're about to feel the aftershock of The Rumble in Los Angeles, as the line up that smoked the 3 Clubs in Hollywood is making its way down to The Casbah for THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO tonight. Local legend, LADY DOTTIE & THE DIAMONDS, LA's FITZ & THE TANTRUMS and Seattle's THE BLAKES combine for a night for the ages.

Special DJ set by local music guru, Tim Pyles.

We're also thrilled to add two new partners to THE RUMBLE: SAN DIEGO this month, in the shape of CITYBEAT and SDDIALEDIN, to go with Indigenous, Trumer Pils, Casbah, M Theory Music, and WOXY.

Mention TRUMER PILS in your Facebook, blog, or Twitter updates about The Rumble and win $100 to Starlite.

TONIGHT @ NEXT BIG NASHVILLE: THE BLACK ANGELS @ FS/WOXY SHOWCASE

It's rainy and gray today in Nashville, perfect for the darkness that is THE BLACK ANGELS, as they play the FS/WOXY showcase tonight at NEXT BIG NASHVILLE at The Exit/In. Joining the Austin band that's OD'd on VU, is someone we're really enjoying, DISAPPEARS, as well as BEAR IN HEAVEN and Nashville's COURTNEY TIDWELL. Quite a line-up. Check the NBN site for details.

PHOTOS FROM LAST NIGHT'S FUTURE SOUNDS/WOXY SHOWCASE IN NASHVILLE

On our first night at NEXT BIG NASHVILLE at The End, we had an amazing turnout to see the FS/WOXY showcase. ALBERTA CROSS delivered a stunning set of music.

Phosphorescence is a process in which energy absorbed by a substance is released relatively slowly in the form of light. Last night's show was capped off by PHOSPHORESCENT who actually threw energy back into the crowd.

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES TONIGHT @ 3 CLUBS

THE RUMBLE: LOS ANGELES on Thursday at 3 Clubs is going to be outrageous!

It's the homecoming of FITZ & THE TANTRUMS, fresh off his tour where he played Red Rocks and The Greek Theatre and heads into KRCW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. Fitz & Co are doing ALL of the Rumble West Coast parties in October.

We found the perfect bands to accompany Fitz for this month's Rumble - from San Diego it's the dynamo that is LADY DOTTIE & THE DIAMONDS. Dotty is like SHARON JONES on speed, and delivers music with The Diamonds that storms like monsoon season.

From Seattle is THE BLAKES! That's right, they are on the bill with a brand new record that sounds like the NUGGETS box set squeezed out a baby and out popped 'Souvenir'. We've already watched them destroy the Rumble: Seattle and the Rumble: Portland, now they take on LA and San Diego as this trio does a round show together this week.

Those lovely ladies, DJ S.i.S. return as our resident DJ's and the party is FREE!

THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCICO TONIGHT @ HARLOT

THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO TURNS 2 YEARS OLD TONIGHT?
Two years???? WTF?

How did it happen? The little party meant to bring together the Bay area indie rock community lasted two years? It started as an indie dance party, then added one band each party, then up to two acts performing, and the future looks like three bands + DJ's.

Harlot has been great to THE RUMBLE: SAN FRANCISCO for two years and Jacek, you are the man for taking care of every band, DJ and Rumble attendee. Watch our for those bar stools late night Drunkula....

For the 2 year party we had to come up with the cream of the crop, and FITZ & THE TANTRUMS provide that very thing. Think HALL & OATES meets ROBERT PALMER meets THIN WHITE DUKE era-Bowie. Add a big splash of Motown and you're getting close to describing FITZ and his wrecking crew as they do the entire West Coast run of RUMBLE dates in October, from Seattle to now Las Vegas.

Listen to the entire Fitz & The Tantrums EP, "Songs For A Break-Up Vol. 1" at http://www.fitzandthetantrums.com

The Rumble: SF wouldn't be the Rumble: SF if it didn't spotlight a band from the Bay area that is also destined for greatness. This month our collective team of partners have cooked up the mighty MAN/MIRACLE from Oakland. You must hear their anthemic "Pushing and Shoving".

Need more? How about special guest DJ's like AARON AXELSEN from POPSCENE/LIVE 105 and DJ TOM THUMP, the guy that digs so deep in the crates his fingernails are black.
Couple those two with resident badasss, DJ BAGEL TED, and you've got yourself a celebration.

The party is FREE if you RSVP here

It's $5 if that's not your thing and you like spending money.

THE RUMBLE: PORTLAND TONIGHT @ HOLOCENE

The October edition of THE RUMBLE: PORTLAND @ Holocene is one for the ages, and all ages, spanning genres and era's.

Headlining the Rumble will be BLUE SKIES FOR BLACK HEARTS, the Portland band that sounds like they broke out of Nuggets-era British Invasion rock. Jangly, jingly, great pop rock and roll.

Coming up from Los Angeles is the mighty FITZ & THE TANTRUMS, a band you've been hearing on WOXY, KEXP, and KCRW often recently with their white boy soul-Hall & Oates meets Robert Palmer meets Motown party sound.

You know it's a stellar bill when your opener is a star about to happen - SALLIE FORD & THE SOUND OUTSIDE. This is throwback fantasy mixed with intelligent lyrics and shouts out to Sunny Day Real Estate. Embrace Sallie, she'll be the world's soon enough.

The party is FREE and all your friends like Pampelmoose, Cravedog and Music Millennium will be there, as well as WOXY.COM and Future Sounds.

MEET SALLIE FORD & THE SOUND OUTSIDE

The best thing about the Future Sounds community is that everyone involved has the same lust for finding new acts and sharing. This time we found out about Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside from FS artist, Fitz & The Tantrums, who saw Sallie open up for The Avett Brothers in Los Angeles. Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside play at tonight's RUMBLE: PORTLAND @ Holocene.

FS: How was it touring with the incredible Avett Brothers?

SF: It was great touring with the Avett Brothers! they are allot of fun and so are the folks that work for them. They have really supportive fans who made an awesome audience.

FS: You're originally from Asheville, North Carolina, what brought you to Portland and how did you meet your band? Can you also introduce your bandmates and what they play?

SF: I moved to Portland on a whim. I heard allot of great things and thought it would be a great place to live, and it is. When I first moved to Portland, I lived in a house with 5 other girls and one of those girls introduced me to a bunch of people from Alaska. I become friends with allot of the Alaskans and one of them eventually introduced me to Ford Tennis and Tyler Tornfelt, who were from Anchorage, Alaska and play in a band called "Syran".
I then met Jeff Munger a year later, while he was playing music on the street. Jeff was born in Portand.
Ford Tennis plays drums. Tyler Tornfelt plays upright bass and Jeff Munger plays lead guitar. I (Sallie Ford) play rhythm guitar and sing as well as write the songs.

FS: You obviously have a "throwback sound", and I'm sure everyone compares you with everyone from Patsy Cline to Billy Holiday. Who are the ladies and fellas that you draw your inspiration from?

SF: Those two names are big influences, as well as Etta James, Aretha Franklin and The Squirrel Nut Zippers (who are from North Carolina as well)

FS: What I like about the few songs I've heard from you is that although you are obviously well versed in the past, you make it fresh and contemporary by dropping in lyrics and references that are clearly our era, like shouts out to Sunny Day Real Estate and Jets To Brazil. Who are your contemporary favorites? Who would you like to tour with next?

SF: Regina Spektor and Tom Waits are probably my top favorite contemporary musician heroes. I also like M. Ward, Langhorne Slim, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down and Nurses.
We also have plans to tour with our Irish buddies, "The Lost Brothers".

FS: The "Not An Animal" EP has been your bread and butter for your most recent bunch of live performances, what's next for Sallie Ford and The Sound Outside? Are there new songs in the studio being polished?

SF: We have many more songs that are unrecorded, but we have plans to record a full length in the near future.

FS: At Future Sounds we're always looking for the next Sallie Ford, are there any up and coming bands that you want to recommend or shouts out to some friend's bands?

SF: Some of our local favorites are:

Hats, The Woolwines, Y la bamba, Hello Electric, Syran, Grey Anne, Ah Holly Family and The Ocean Floor.

FS: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions and for playing The Rumble: Portland this week.
